Overview. The Complexity component of the IPAP project aimed to establish the patterns of syntactic complexity, accuracy, and lexical complexity in the writing of heritage language learners (HLLs) at two levels of functional proficiency: Intermediate and Advanced (American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages, ACTFL, 2012 Guidelines). This analysis was conducted on writing by HLLS enrolled in two four-year MSI colleges and one two-year college. The writing samples were collected by the IPAP team, using a writing proficiency assessment tool modelled after the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT). Results show that these three measures align, to a notable degree, with proficiency sublevels and with writing prompt genre/difficulty (both previously unexplored in Heritage Spanish).
